Yesterday we had our shakedown sail to Marie Galante which is approximately 20 miles from our last anchorage in Isle de Gosier off Guadeloupe.

It was a great opportunity for us to test out the boat. We were hard on the wind for the passage but made it on one tack. Its interesting to observe the weather patterns here. You can see some pretty dramatic cloud formations as the front approaches. Sometimes there is rain and wind, sometimes just wind.

We got hit with a couple of these squalls yesterday where the wind piped up to 23 knots but we had practiced reefing in lighter winds when we first got the boat so it all went pretty smoothly.

We are now in Port Louis which is the main harbour of Marie Galante. According to the guide book, it is possible to experience a two types of swell here. The first lulls you gently to sleep, the second throws you violently from your bed.

Thankfully we got the first option!

We had a good chance to explore the Island yesterday and it feels like it is stepped back in time. Having said that they are quite progressive in terms of taking on new technology – Over 50 wind turbines on the east coast power the electricity needs for the Island. This is a continuing tradition as at one time they had 600 sail powered windmills to grind the sugar cane which is their most important crop – I mean there are a lot of rum drinkers in the Caribbean 🙂 This is all pretty impressive considering this place is pretty remote right out in the Atlantic ocean.

When we went exploring yesterday we got hit with another weather front and it pelted down with rain for over an hour. We thought we were back in Ireland 🙂

We definitely got that laid back Caribbean vibe and even found a Pig sleeping under a tree which he shared with his Cat Buddy 🙂

Our next Port of call is a group of Islands called the Saints. We plan to sail to Bourg de Saintes on Terre De Haut.

Catch up with you there.

Thanks for watching – talk soon.
